• Due to the current hiring freeze, the City of Alton is not accepting applications for any permanent position, unless listed in the Hirings Section on this page.
• If a vacancy is to be filled in any position, we will post information in The Telegraph and Today's Advantage papers, as well as on this website. Please note, that positions within any bargaining unit will first be filled from that unit.
• Persons who wish to apply for Police Officer or Firefighter during non-hiring periods need to provide their name and address for a mailing list. They will be contacted and advised when applications will be available.

Hirings
• Applications for Firefighter are no longer available as of 4:00 P.M. on August 27, 2010.
• Applications for Police Officer will be available starting at 8:00 A.M. on September 2, 2010, and ending at 4:00 P.M. on October 1, 2010. Please note, the Civil Service Office will be closed on Monday, September 6, 2010, in observance of Labor Day. Applications must be completed, including copies of all requested documents, and received in the Civil Service Office by the ending date and time.
• If you would like a Police Officer or Firefighter application mailed to you, please provide a Self Addressed Stamped (9"x12" manila) Envelope with $1.05 postage attached. Send this to City of Alton, Civil Service, 101 E. 3rd St., Room 100, Alton, IL 62002.
• Written examination for prospective Police Officers is October 8, 2010, at 6:00 P.M., at Alton Middle School's Main Cafe (2200 College Avenue) This is a general aptitude type of examination.
• Agility examination for prosective Police Officers is October 23, 2010, at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville. Times to attend will be assigned to those that pass all areas of the written examination with a socre of 70 or greater. For more information on the agility examination, please click here.
